Bina Dao,

Faculty

Hoang-Anh Dao, better known as Bina Dao, was born in Saigon, Vietnam, and raised in Houston, Texas. With a bachelor's and master's degree in biochemistry, she graduated from the University of Houston. After joining YES Prep in 2013, Bina taught Biology and AP Biology at YES Prep Southeast, where she also served as grade-level chair. She took on the role of Dean of Students in 2017, leading the school's discipline and culture. Then, she assumed the Director of Student Support role, ensuring quality student experiences on campus and promoting family engagement. She joined YES Prep's School Culture Team in the fall of 2020. She has led critical work, including innovative student support during a pandemic, implementing restorative discipline practices system-wide, focusing on discipline disproportionality, and contributing to social-emotional learning programming. She believes connections built on positive relationships and community can help people harness their strengths and achieve collective change. This aligns with the principle that all students can learn, grow, and achieve to have access to college and lead fulfilling lives.

When asked why AMA is important to her, here is what Bina shared:

AMA is important because it acknowledges diversity and promotes equity in education. The abilities, needs, and challenges of each student are unique. To help students and staff reach their full potential, leaders connect with leaders through AMA to facilitate learning and build knowledge. AMA promotes social justice and equity in education and society by advocating for these issues.
